Does the party leader have to be a member of parliament?

In Canada, does the leader of a political party have to be an elected member of parliament for a riding? Also is this the case if the party wins majority and the party leader becomes prime minister?|||The leader of a political party does not have to be an MP. This is currently the case with the leader of the Green Party, Elizabeth May.

If the leader of a party that wins a majority of the seats in an election does not personally win his/her seat they can still be Prime Minister (There is no legal requirement for the PM to be an MP). That said, it is customary for the PM to hold a seat (if necessary by some elected member of the party giving up their seat to the leader), but two PMs have governed from the Senate: Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott and Sir Mackenzie Bowell.
