So which ever party won the majority of congress, the leader of that party would become President.|||That's how it generally works in other democracies.
The president just isn't very powerful on his own.
They also have different ideologies, socialist, communist, conservative etc. which form much more diverse parliaments and coalitions are often the name of the game.
And the president has no veto power.
Parliament should rule everything in a parliamentary form of democratic government.
The problem with American is its people and politicians do not feel it is their duty of the elected to govern all of the people in a rational fair way.
And you elect stupid people like Regan and Jr. Bush who act more like dictator/kings than the people's leaders.
Look at the right-wing extremism which prevailed during the GOPs six year stint?
When a guy like Tony Blair loses the public trust his own party de-fangs and then removes him. Nobody argues about polls and opinions. The public has lost their trust in him and its obvious to everybody, even him. So he's essentially gone and has been quite a while now.
In America you're just stuck with Bush who lost the public trust years ago, but still has the veto..|||I think the way things are now are good.
People don't vote anyway, so it wouldn't change anything.|||You are not quite there. For a better political system there would be no parties. Partisan politics is driving a wedge in this country that is not healthy for us as citizens.
I have read up on my history, and nowhere in the constitution does it say that a political figure must belong to a group based on a cognative bias. Keep grazing in the fields, you are the kinda sheep the dems and repubs look for.|||Great. Another person trying to convince us to rejoin England. Read up on your history. There is a reason why the founders did what they did.|||No, that would destroy the separation of powers concept behind the Constitution.
We don't need any one political party monopolizing the government...a.k.a. fascism|||That is the way it works in a parliamentary system - The Prime Minister is the leader of his party and also a member of the legislature.
In the U.S., in theory we have separation of powers - But there is evidence from the way the U.S. has been governed in the past six years that the country is better off when the President, and majorities in the senate and house are not all members of the same party - because then the legislature doesn't abdicate its responsibilities.
Parliamentary systems do have one advantage: When the legislature loses confidence in the Prime Minister, they can call for a new election. - In the U.S., we will have to wait until January of 2009 to get a new president, no matter what kind of job Bush does.|||The beauty of our current system is:
"Gridlock"
It keeps things from going too fast in either direction.|||That's how it's done in canada, and i think it's a crap shoot either way.|||The Democrats had 40 years of majority up until Bill Clinton
and Bush had 6 years with the Republicans in the majority
So far I have not seen that it has done much good who
is where.
What we need is to have the Senators and Representatives
have term limits the same as the President, the last thing
we need is to have career criminals in charge of the country
and I am not dividing and party lines here, any one that
thinks that their own party is squeaky clean in not living
in reality.|||In our system of government the Executive branch and the Legislative branch are separate institutions. The President of the United States should not be trying to do the role of the Legislative branch, nor the congress do the role of the Executive branch. Therefore the system we have in them having no connection as to percentage of seats in the Legislative branch is best.
To have them at odds with each other is often a good thing for America.|||NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Political parties suck, they are too strong. George Washington warned against them in the beginning. We need to forget about them and vote for people based on their individual qualifications and opinions. The republicans and democrats are the same, the people lose no matter which is in charge. We need to take the power back from the parties!!
Vote Ron Paul in 2008!!!
